What is turmeric?
Turmeric, or as it’s scientifically known ‘Curcuma Longa’, is an underground stem of a plant that belongs to the ginger spice family. Whilst it’s native to India, this potent spice has since gained popularity worldwide due to its long list of nutritional benefits and antioxidant properties.
It can be consumed fresh, powdered, or as a pickled form which is the most popular method in Southeastern countries, however, to make the most of the nutritional benefits turmeric has to offer, it is recommended to take turmeric in its raw, extracted form, so that you don’t miss out on the benefits of turmeric’s most powerful active ingredient, curcumin.
What is curcumin?
Curcumin is the chemical-compound found within turmeric and is the main active ingredient that is responsible for the majority of turmeric’s health benefits.
This natural substance has powerful antioxidant properties and is favoured by many for its reported ability to reduce inflammation. Because of this, scientists and charities such as the Arthritis Foundation have been exploring the benefits of curcumin for those that suffer from inflammatory issues such as issues, such as arthritis, or eczema.
What does turmeric taste like?
Flavour-wise, turmeric has an earthy, sharp taste with a little bit of a peppery kick. This is why it’s almost always paired with bigger flavours and textures to balance out the taste. Think sharp, spicy curries enriched with sweet coconut milk or butter.
At The Tumeric Co, we pair our shots with something a little sweet, or a little spicy to make sure we cater to all types of tastebuds. From sweeter shots paired with beetroot, to spicy ginger shots to give turmeric a warming kick - our collection of shots offers up plenty of variations. If you’re new to turmeric and still undecided on which you’d prefer, we offer a mixed starter box featuring something sweet, something spicy and something simple - so you can decide for yourself on how best to enjoy the taste of turmeric.
How do you pronounce turmeric?
The pronunciation of turmeric is widely debated, however the correct way to pronounce turmeric is ‘tuh-muh-ruhk’, rather than ‘tyoo-merh-ick’.
What time of the day should you take turmeric?
Whilst this varies between personal preference and scientific advice, the recommended time to take turmeric is three or more hours before, or after eating a meal. This time period is when your body is likely to be in a ‘fasting’ state, which is known to improve the absorption of the chemical compound found within turmeric, curcumin.
However, ultimately, the decision of when best to take turmeric shots or supplements is down to your personal preference, though it’s important to recognise that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that some people may have sleep disturbances if taken before bedtime, due to the natural boost of energy turmeric can provide.
How long does it take for turmeric to work?
Whilst this varies from person to person, it’s important to bear in mind that, as with most supplements, there is no quick-fix and it takes time to truly reap the full nutritional benefits turmeric has to offer.
When taking turmeric, either as a supplement or in shot form, the levels of curcumin will gradually begin to build up in your system and this is when you will start to feel the beneficial effects of this potent superfood. This time period can differentiate depending on a number of individual contributing factors, including underlying health conditions and a person’s total body mass, so ultimately it’s a matter of time and patience - rather than jumping the gun and expecting immediate results.
How much turmeric should I take daily?
Studies suggest that people looking to implement turmeric into their daily routine should take doses of 500 - 2,000mg of turmeric per day. Recommended in the form of an extract with curcumin concentration, that is much higher than the amounts naturally occurring in foods.
In our turmeric shots, each of our scientifically-formulated blends contains 35g of raw turmeric root, ensuring you get more than enough from the recommended daily dosage, as well as a great level of curcumin from added black pepper to boost absorption levels, giving you full access to the nutritional benefits on offer.
